The ship's Maiden Voyage (first departure) is currently scheduled for October 20, 2021 (14-night Transatlantic from Europe to Florida), and the inaugural Caribbean departure for November 3rd. On November 21, 2019, at Marghera Shipyard was held the vessel's keel-laying ceremony during which was placed the first hull block (14 m long, 34 m wide, weight 500 tons) part of the midship section. The ship was launched (floated out from drydock) on October 1, 2020. The ceremony was attended by Madrina/godmother Mai Elmar (Cruise Port Rotterdam's Executive Director), Cyril Tatar (Holland America Line's VP of Newbuilds) and Antonio Quintano (Fincantieri Marghera's Director). The 7-day itinerary was planned as one-way from Trieste to Civitavecchia-Rome. Between August 1 and October 10, the new ship was planned for deployment in Northern Europe visiting ports in Norway, the UK, Iceland.
It’s big compared to the much smaller ships we’ve sailed on, like Windstar Cruises’ ships (148 to 342-passenger ships) and Seabourn (458- to 600-passenger ships). It’s also covered and shaded, so even at noon in the Caribbean, we could comfortably walk around the deck when at sea, without getting sunburned. All HAL ships now feature pickleball courts on the top sports deck. On our previous Nieuw Statendam cruise, we tried to reserve a cabana for our second sea day; sadly, they were all gone.
Some have extra-deep balconies, making them 405 square feet in size (though the interior is the same size). Rotterdam also hits all the right notes when it comes to its staterooms. Last but not least, there’s the main show lounge, called the World Stage. Then there’s Billboard Onboard, where a live pianist plays chart-topping hits. A live band here kicks out smash hits that get everyone rockin’ and rollin’ like it was the 70s again. A few more skips down the ship’s Music Walk and you come to the Rolling Stone Rock Room, lit up with electric lights.

While you have to pay a surcharge to eat at these, you only have to check out reviews of Holland America Rotterdam dining to see it’s worth forking out extra for the specialty dining experiences. But there are also four specialty restaurants onboard you’ll want to try. In addition to the ensuite bedroom, they feature a living room, guest toilet, dining room and pantry with a microwave and fridge. Suites offer more space and luxury extras than the balcony cabins. Of the 1,340 accommodations, 912 have private balconies (164 suites and 748 Verandah staterooms). Perhaps the biggest difference we noticed on the Holland America Rotterdam ship (and the Nieuw Statendam, which we cruised on in early 2020) relates to the onboard entertainment.
Cruise Activities On Board
It could be that HAL has seriously upped its culinary game across all ships. There’s plenty of cupboard and drawer space, with lots of wooden hangers. On our previous Nieuw Statendam cruise, a gifted classical quintet on the ship’s Lincoln Center Stage played Schumann pieces to heart-tugging effect – stopping casual passers-by in their tracks and luring them in to linger.
As the co-flagship with the MS Amsterdam, the MS Rotterdam sets Holland America’s standard. Setting sail on its first cruise in 1997, this Rotterdam class ship is based on the 1959 vessel of a similar name and offers spacious accommodations for about 1,404 people. The ship currently travels various European and South American itineraries.Since inception, the MS Rotterdam went through a series of Signature of Excellence upgrades in 2009. The most noticeable are the Lanai staterooms and spacious public areas with works of art. As well, elegance dining rooms, $2 million worth of art and antiques, a teak deck, private verandas, new furnishings, and expanded stateroom amenities complete the improvements travelers may notice. We were recently on the Rotterdam on a 10-day Southern Caribbean cruise and also Koningsdam in Alaska last fall. Koningsdam has the Music Walk too - almost identical to Rotterdam. When your stomach starts growling, there’s a BBQ lunch to tuck into. Or you can plonk yourself down on wooden bar stools in the breezy Lobster Shack to chow down on fresh grilled lobster (extra charge). These are the only spa spaces that are gender-specific & clothing optional. Overall, the food in every venue was quite good, and excelled in some restaurants such as Pinnacle Grill. Even the main dining room selection and quality were surprisingly good and never had a miss with any of the dining experiences. Although the ship accommodates all ages, Rotterdam’s guests largely tend to be of the Baby Boomer and early Generation X age groups, averaging between 55 and 65 years.
Onboard live musical entertainment is concentrated in the Music Walk area (forward-midship on Plaza Deck 2) housing the music-themed venues Lincoln Center Stage & B.B. King's Blues Club, Rolling Stone Rock Room, and Billboard Onboard. Dive-In offers a variety of casual culinary classics, using the highest quality ingredients. Enjoy a burger, grilled to perfection and served on a toasted brioche with our own trade-marked secret sauce. Savor a succulent Nathan’s Famous gourmet hot dog with golden French fries.
Lido Pool (one of the 2 swimming pools) has an outdoor movie screen, 3 whirlpools and 2 levels of cushioned lounge chairs. The central pool area (Magrodome) is on 2 levels to create glass-enclosed space. The lower level has traditional poolside elements, while the mezzanine level offers more seating, a huge LED screen for poolside movies, Deli and Pizza (complimentary fast-food bars). During the day, get an educational experience when you’re not in port. The Digital Workshop, with Microsoft-certified professionals, teaches cruisers to take quality photos and, later, to edit movies and images, create scrapbooks, and share everything on social media.
